Members of the Los Angeles Division of the Academic Senate

In accordance with UCLA Academic Senate Bylaws 140 and 155, the following constitutes a distribution by electronic mail of a “Notification of Actions” taken at the Thursday, April 3, 2025, Legislative Assembly. Action items are defined as “any item on the Legislative Assembly agenda, including items on the consent calendar, requiring a vote of approval.”

Materials related to the April 3, 2025, meeting of the Legislative Assembly are available on the Legislative Assembly website.

Any petition by at least one-third of the voting members of the Legislative Assembly on any actions taken by the Legislative Assembly must be received in writing by the Academic Senate Chair within 10 instructional days from the date of distribution of this “Notification of Actions” memorandum. For the May 15 meeting, that date is June 2, 2025.

Minutes become official when the Legislative Assembly approves the document at the subsequent Legislative Assembly meeting. This notification is not a substitute for or an alteration of the requirement to record action items in the meeting minutes.

May 15, 2025, Legislative Assembly Meeting – Notification of Actions
 

  1. Approval of Draft Minutes:
    The Legislative Assembly approved unanimously the draft minutes of the April 3, 2025, meeting as part of the Consent Calendar.
  2. The Legislative Assembly approved unanimously the following items as part of the Consent Calendar: 

    •    Amendment to Bylaw 65.1 and Appendix XIII (Undergraduate Council) and Bylaw 65.2 and Appendix III (Graduate Council)
    •    Amendment to Bylaw 65.3 and Appendix XVIII (Council on Planning and Budget)
    •    Amendment to Bylaw 65.5 (Undergraduate Admissions and Relations with Schools)
    •    Amendment to Bylaw 67.7 (Academic Program Review Committee) and Appendix XVI (Academic Program Reviews)
    •    Amendment to Bylaw 100 (Rules and Jurisdiction)
    •    Amendment to the Department of Asian American Studies Bylaws
    •    Amendment to the Department of Biostatistics Bylaws
    •    Amendment to the Department of Computer Science Bylaws
    •    Amendment to the Department of Philosophy Bylaws
    •    Amendment to Regulations 420 and 421 (Academic Requirements of the School of Education & Information Studies Bachelor's Degree) and Regulation 624 (Doctor of Education (Ed.D.))
    •    Establishment of Department of Nuclear Medicine and Theranostics Bylaws
    •    New Officers and Committee Roster 2025-26
     

  3. Proposal to Disestablish the Study of Religion Interdepartmental Program and Establish the Department of Religious Studies:
    Legislative Assembly members voted via the Academic Senate Data Management System on the proposal to disestablish the Study of Religion Interdepartmental Program and establish the Department of Religious Studies. The Legislative Assembly voted 80 Approve, 30 Oppose, and 22 members abstained. This proposal included divisional bylaws, and thus required a 2/3 affirmative vote of 132 voting members present for approval. As 61% of eligible members present voted in favor, the Legislative Assembly did not approve this proposal.
  4. Proposal to Disestablish the Labor Studies Interdepartmental Program and Establish the Department of Labor Studies:
    Legislative Assembly members voted via the Academic Senate Data Management System on the proposal to disestablish the Labor Studies Interdepartmental Program and establish the Department of Labor Studies. The Legislative Assembly voted 90 Approve, 19 Oppose, and 23 members abstained. This proposal included divisional bylaws, and thus required a 2/3 affirmative vote of 132 voting members present for approval. As 68% of eligible members present voted in favor, the Legislative Assembly approved this proposal.
  5. Statement from the Academic Council, “The Defense of the University”: 
    Legislative Assembly members voted via the Academic Senate Data Management System on the Statement from the Academic Council, “The Defense of the University.” The Legislative Assembly received a total of 109 votes cast: 106 Approve, 3 Oppose. A majority of votes cast (97%) were to Approve this Statement.
  6. Statement from Big Ten Academic Alliance, “Statement in Support of the Core Mission and Values of Higher Education in the United States of America”: 
    Legislative Assembly members voted via the Academic Senate Data Management System on the Statement from the Big Ten Academic Alliance, “Statement in Support of the Core Mission and Values of Higher Education in the United States of America.” The Legislative Assembly received a total of 108 votes cast: 103 Approve, 5 Oppose. A majority of votes cast (95%) were to Approve this Statement.
