November 2023 UCLA Academic Senate Updates

Royce Hall

To: Members of the Los Angeles Division of the Academic Senate

 Dear Senate Faculty:

I can’t believe how quickly Fall quarter is moving! There is a lot going on in the Senate right now — all of our Councils and Committees have started meeting, as have the FECs. Campus has been a hub of activity. Notably, the UC Systemwide Academic Congress on Graduate Education was held in early October. Senate leadership, our Graduate Council Chair Brooke Scelza and James Bisley (co-chair of Future of Graduate Programs and Graduate Student Support Joint Task Force) all attended. Both this divisional joint task force as well as the Systemwide Joint task Force on Graduate Education will produce reports later this year.

The campus is also beginning the search process for the next Chancellor. As detailed below, the UCLA Chancellor Search Advisory Committee will be visiting UCLA in November, and holding a series of meetings and town halls with campus stakeholders. This is an opportunity for the UCLA Chancellor Search Advisory Committee to learn about our vision of what the campus needs to accomplish under the leadership of the next Chancellor and the qualifications required to be successful in the role. I encourage you to attend the faculty town hall.

Finally, many of us on campus are affected by the crisis in the Middle East. We have been working with partners across campus and supporting our instructors to ensure you have guidance for instruction (as detailed below), guidance for classroom disruptions (distributed by the Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost), as well as the Teaching Strategies to Support Academic Continuity Though Difficult Times (distributed by the Vice Provost for Teaching and Learning).

As a reminder, my next Senate Chair Office Hours are Tuesday, November 7, from 10:30 a.m. to noon at Playa Café in the Faculty Center. Please stop by!

Thank you,

Andrea Kasko
Chair, UCLA Academic Senate

You may also provide confidential input and/or to nominate any individuals you feel are well qualified for the role by writing UCLAChancellorSearch@ucop.edu or filling out the UCLA Chancellor Search Survey.

Your Academic Senate

The Academic Senate is only as strong as its engaged faculty. We uphold the principle of faculty governance in higher education only when faculty exercise their governing authority. We welcome you to volunteer, contact your Legislative Assembly representatives, reach out to your Faculty Executive Committee Chairs who serve on the Council of Faculty Chairs, visit the Academic Senate website, and follow us on X (formerly Twitter) at @UCLASenate.
