Council on Research

To:  Academic Senate, Administrative Officers, Deans, Department Chairs, Directors, Vice Chancellors and Vice Provosts

The UCLA Academic Senate’s Council on Research (COR) is pleased to remind you about its grant opportunities for UCLA Senate faculty, announced on December 14, 2022 — the Faculty Research Grant (FRG) and the Research Enabling Grant (REG) — to receive funding during 2023–2024.

Members of the Academic Senate may apply for one of two COR-sponsored grants: either a Research Enabling Grant (REG) of up to $2,000, or a Faculty Research Grant (FRG) of up to $10,000.

Research Enabling Grant (REG) Program

The REG program is designed to assist Senate faculty who need a relatively small amount of grant support to conduct their research. Applicants may request up to the maximum of $2,000. Faculty members whose total research support exceeds $50,000 (including funding from any external agencies, as well as any internal funding or start-up funds) for the 2023–24 academic year are not eligible to apply to the REG Program. Funding will be merit-based and dependent on available funds.

Faculty Research Grant (FRG) Program

The FRG program is designed for Senate faculty who require more substantial amounts of funding to conduct their research. Applicants may request up to the maximum of $10,000. Faculty members whose total research support exceeds $100,000 (including funding from any external agencies as well as internal funding and start-up funds) for the 2023–24 academic year are not eligible to apply for the FRG Program. Funding will be merit-based and dependent on available funds.

The application submission deadline for both grant programs is Wednesday, February 15, 2023, at 5:00 p.m., PSTPlease plan to submit an application early to avoid unexpected last-minute delays as COR will not consider late submissions regardless of circumstances.

Please note:

  1. The application is available on the COR Faculty Grants Program web page.
  2. Each eligible Senate faculty member may submit only one proposal per application cycle.
  3. Grant recipients must spend funds within the fiscal year for which they are requested. Any unexpended funds are automatically returned to COR on June 30, 2024. No extensions will be available under any circumstances.
  4. All of the restrictions governing allowable and non-allowable expenses per university policy will apply to this program. Details are available in the specific Call for Proposal links as well as on the COR Faculty Grants Program web page.

Sincerely,

Jeff Brantingham
Chair, Council on Research
