CAP Guidance: Advancement to Professor, Step VI

For Regular Professor and Professor-in-Residence series*, advancement to Step VI is based not only upon performance since the last preceding advancement but also upon performance during the candidate’s entire academic career. To advance to Step VI, colleagues must demonstrate sustained and continuing excellence in the following three areas: (1) scholarship and/or creative practice; (2) university teaching; and (3) university and/or public service. Above and beyond that, great academic distinction, recognized nationally or internationally, will be required in scholarly and/or creative achievement, teaching and/or service. CAP acknowledges that criteria of accomplishment vary from field to field.

For advancement to Step VI, external letters are not required, though they are allowed and the candidate may request them. External letters are encouraged if the case is an acceleration to or through Step VI, or if an advancement to Step VI or higher is proposed as part of a Merit Equity Review. For appointment to Step VI, external letters are required.

As required for all cases coming to CAP, a detailed analysis of the candidate’s research and/or creative work will be crucial in the departmental review process and will be a critical factor in CAP’s assessment. It is incumbent upon the department to provide a clear, detailed, and objective analysis of the importance and impact of the candidate’s work, including details verifying that the candidate has “great academic distinction and national recognition” as required in the CALL.

In cases where a Senate member has undergone one or more five-year reviews before applying for advancement to Step VI, the candidate, ad hoc committee, and/or department chair should explain the reasons for any deferral.
