CAP Guidance: Commitment to the University Mission of Inclusive Excellence

Key Takeaways:

  • Faculty may highlight their contributions to inclusive excellence in their research, teaching, and/or service in their personal statement.

Central to UCLA’s mission is a commitment to inclusive excellence. Appendix 41 of the CALL affirms this commitment and provides a synopsis of the Academic Personnel Manual (APM 210-1-d), which states that “Contributions in all areas of faculty achievement that promote diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging should be given due recognition in the academic personnel process, and they should be evaluated and credited in the same way as other faculty achievements.” Appendix 41 adds: “In reflecting on candidates’ personal and professional experiences and perspectives, faculty are encouraged, but not required, to discuss their past contributions and future commitments to advancing UCLA's mission.”

Inclusive excellence may be approached and evaluated under several different rubrics, and it is not the purpose of this guidance to enumerate these exhaustively. They will emerge in different ways in the various aspects of research, teaching, service, and outreach practiced at UCLA. The following list from Appendix 41 of the CALL gives examples of contributions to inclusive excellence:

  • Efforts to advance access to education;
  • Public service that addresses the needs of California populations;
  • Research and scholarship in a scholar’s area that highlights inclusivity;
  • Mentoring and advising students and faculty members with the goal of inclusive excellence;
  • Pedagogical practices and learning theories that create inclusive learning environments and communities.

Contributions to inclusive excellence may be described in a separate self-contained statement, or incorporated into the appropriate sections of the personal statement on teaching, research, and service. Faculty review committees should give due consideration to these contributions and department chairs should address these contributions in recommendation letters. Administrators should take an active leadership role in ensuring these contributions are recognized and valued across all aspects of the University.

Further guidance on this issue may be found in Appendix 41 of the CALL.
