To: All Faculty
Dear Colleagues:
As fall classes begin, I strongly encourage you to review two recently released systemwide memos offering guidance on graduate student directed studies courses and expectations for academic research, distinct from academic worker employment expectations:
- Update on the Joint Senate-Administration Workgroup on the Future of UC Doctoral Programs (PDF)
- Academic Senate Guidelines for Directed Studies Courses (PDF)
Please note that these guidelines pertain to the 590 series (596, 599, etc.) on our campus: please ignore the 299 numbering, which refers to the course numbers used on other UC campuses.
As announced in March 2023, Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost Darnell Hunt and I co-charged a Future of Graduate Programs and Graduate Student Support Joint Task Force, co-chaired by James Bisley, 2022–23 Chair of the Graduate Council, and Susan Ettner, Dean of Graduate Education. The Joint Task Force is working on specific recommendations on these matters, to be available later in the new academic year. In the meantime, I am forwarding these general guidelines and principles and strongly encourage you to read them carefully.
Sincerely,
Jessica Cattelino
Chair, UCLA Academic Senate
