December 2025, UCLA Academic Senate Updates

Royce Hall

To: Academic Senate Faculty

Dear Colleagues:

Our year is drawing to a close and I'd like to express my gratitude to all of you. Thank you particularly to those that have taken the time to reach out to me, served on Senate committees, and participated in shared governance through town halls, advocacy, and discussions. I’m hopeful that 2026 will be a great new year for our UCLA community.

The Senate leadership is committed to improving communication to faculty, and as part of this commitment we have hosted three town halls this quarter. We’re grateful to the senior administrative leaders who have shared in these events and likewise strive for greater transparency and communication. As we think about further communication models, we’d like to collect your feedback through a brief survey to find out what can be improved about these events, who you would like to hear from, and how often (and in what format) they should be held. Please take a few minutes to fill out the Town Halls survey and let us know your thoughts. (And if you have not completed the survey on bureaucratic red tape from November, please do that as well. See below.)

Budgetary updates: The Council on Planning and Budget (CPB) has recently received unit-level budget information from last year for the majority of campus units. CPB will conduct analyses to provide advice and participate in budgetary meetings in the new year, which are important steps forward in shared governance. As mentioned in November, I am participating in the Chancellor’s Executive Budget Action Group (EBAG), where currently we are discussing methodology to evaluate budgetary items within a constrained budget.

The Legislative Assembly resolutions on Restoring Shared Governance in Campus Budget Planning and Information Technology Accountability, Transparency, and Shared Governance were transmitted to EVCP Hunt and Chancellor Frenk on Dec 3, 2025, along with letters reiterating the specific requests for information and actions. We’ve received a message from EVCP Hunt’s office that responses will be provided this week. I will share more updates on the resolutions in the new year.

I wish you a restful Winter break and a joyous New Year!

Sincerely,

Megan McEvoy
Chair, UCLA Academic Senate

UCLA Senate Faculty Survey on Town Halls

As mentioned above, we would like to gather feedback about the three town halls that we’ve hosted this term (Aug 14-federal funding and other issues, Oct 28-budget with VC/CFO Agostini, Dec 4-Q&A with Chancellor Frenk). Whether you attended any of these events or not, we ask you take a few minutes to fill out this brief Town Halls survey that will help guide our activities throughout the remainder of the academic year.

UCLA Senate Faculty Mini Survey From November

As mentioned in the November Senate Chair newsletter, we are seeking further details on the “red tape” (i.e., bureaucracy) that faculty have encountered at UCLA. If you haven’t already, we ask you to take a few moments to complete this short (three questions) anonymous follow-up survey about bureaucracy from which the Senate can identify actionable items. This survey will be open through mid-January. Thank you to the many of you who completed the survey.

Recent Legislative Assembly Resolutions

The Legislative Assembly of the Los Angeles Division of the UC Academic Senate endorsed two resolutions at its November 2025 meeting, which have been conveyed to Chancellor Frenk and Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost Hunt for response and action: Resolution on Restoring Shared Governance in Campus Budget Planning and Resolution on Information Technology Accountability, Transparency, and Shared Governance.

UC Academic Council Recommendations on the Total Remuneration Study

The Academic Council of the UC Academic Senate offered detailed Recommendations on the Total Remuneration Study

UC Academic Council Statement on Gender-Affirming Care, Research, and Teaching at UC

The Academic Council of the UC Academic Senate unanimously endorsed a Statement on the Importance of Continued Gender-Affirming Care, Research, and Teaching at the University of California.
