Dear Colleagues:
We write to provide guidance related to instruction during building cooling restrictions.
The Campus Cooling Response Plan outlines three stages. If your classroom is directly affected by the curtailment, particularly if Stage 3 cooling restrictions are implemented, instructors have discretion to shift to temporary remote learning with departmental approval, in accordance with the Academic Senate’s Guidance to Departments for Authorizing Temporary Emergency Distance Instruction.
Individual instructors who may need to extend emergency remote instruction beyond one week must seek Departmental authorization and report such cases to the Registrar’s Office as noted in the guidance linked above. We encourage departments to develop clear internal procedures for considering requests for emergency remote instruction.
The Academic Senate’s Course Syllabus Policy requires instructors to announce course requirements, assignments, deadlines, and methods of evaluation at the start of the quarter. However, instructors maintain customary discretion and autonomy to adapt courses, assignments, and exams to extenuating circumstances while honoring Academic Senate regulations and departmental policies as well as ensuring equitable access for all students. Instructors should choose the approach that is best for their specific course, in alignment with departmental policies – this is likely to differ across fields.
We encourage instructors to consult the Teaching and Learning Center's (TLC) best practices for remote instruction.
We appreciate your continued efforts to support UCLA’s academic mission, and we wish you a productive and rewarding year ahead.
Sincerely,
